Let’s get real and get active in addressing this predicted problem that is now impacting all geographic areas of our country. Compassionomics Evidence That Caring Makes a Difference. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) were Rhodes scholars. EMS is not deemed essential in 37 states in the US, NJ being one of them. Public safety and health is achieved through an integral system of police, fire, AND EMS. ARP/CARES funding has not been allocated to this vital service and patients are suffering! The police officers placed in this unwinnable situation are also negatively impacted. It makes the argument that not only is showing compassion the right thing to do, its also an effective way to improve health and drive down health care. For decades, leaders in EMS have been shouting from the mountain tops, attempting to gain traction to develop real solutions, including proper funding and infastructure for sustaining EMS services nationally. Compassionomics provides the evidence that one simple tool, compassion, can affect not only the outcomes for our patients, but also the financial health of our organizations and the well-being of our providers. As national EMS Week comes to a close, I’m hoping smelling salts awakens the senses of those with power to make a difference.
